ARTSONG I

Project type

Projection Mapping

Date

May 4th 2016

Location

Lorain, OH

For the first ArtSong performance, I collaborated with Grammy-winning pianist Angelin Chang at the Lorain Historical Center. I created a visual environment that elevated the concert into a hybrid of classical performance and contemporary digital art. My role was to design and projection-map original motion content that responded directly to the musical narrative, matching Angelin’s phrasing, tone color, and dynamic shifts.

This marked the first Artsong collaboration I created with Angelin Chang, presented at the FireFish Festival in downtown Lorain. We were brought together by James Levin, whose curatorial vision intentionally connects classical artists with contemporary media and unconventional performance contexts.

The piece fused live piano with custom-built visuals designed specifically for FireFish’s outdoor, site-responsive environment. My visuals were structured to move with the phrasing, dynamics, and emotional arc of the Artsong repertoire—using light, motion, and spatial depth to extend the music beyond the stage and into the surrounding architecture and night sky. Set against the raw, industrial character of the festival and its waterfront setting, this collaboration established the foundation of our ongoing approach: classical performance recontextualized through contemporary visual language, making Artsong feel immediate, cinematic, and accessible to a broad festival audience.
